E-Coat 8612 is a silver-based antimicrobial. Silver is an extremely effective long-term antimicrobial when it is used in a controlled release form. As an inorganic, silver is found in over 255 consumer products including shoes, textiles, an automotive interiors.
Over the years, silver has proven effective as a long-term antimicrobial. However, in ASTM and AATCC and other industry standard laboratory tests, it has failed to perform as an agent that provides quick elimination of existing mold colonies. The reason is related to how silver works as an antimicrobial. The benefit of long term performance requires sacrifice of some short-term effectiveness. In other words, it takes too long for the silver to become active in a high challenge environment where mold is present in high concentrations. Therefore, silver alone cannot provide the complete protection needed to effectively eliminate existing and future mold concerns.
